With experience as a practicing artist for the last 25+ years, I now offer consultation and support for undergraduate/postgraduate students undertaking research in Visual Arts regarding their own art practice.
Having studied through Unisa towards my undergraduate degree in Visual Art, I experienced the challenges of a long distance learning situation and the stumbling blocks this route may create towards successful completion of a degree – perhaps a harder route because of much less access to lecturers, fellow students and the benefits of University workshops equipped to support learning also in the practical realisation of ideas. Positive by-products of studying independently though, are developing a strong work ethic and in time a clear 'personal voice’ as an artist. During my Unisa studies (1998) I had the opportunity and joy to teach junior students in order to help them explore and develop new techniques and approaches to practical art making processes.
The ‘other side of the coin’ in terms of a tertiary/university learning environment experience, was provided by Michaelis School of Art through which I obtained my MFA.
